EICMA 2010
Here are some pics from this year's EICMA motor show in Milan. If you ever get the chance to go, do so - it's fantastic!
We'll start with the bike voted Best of Show, the MV Agusta F3. At the show I happened to meet Pierre Terblanche, who doesn't like it. He said it was an old, tired design, and that the pipes look like an afterthought.
Respectfully, Mr. Terblanche, I have to disagree.
Say what you will about the Italians, but they do know how to make their bikes sexy. Of course, a little "enhancement" never hurts:
Attendance at the show was impressive. Me and the friend I was with had an unbelievable introduction to things...within our first 10 minutes there we were passed by a whole group of military police escorting none other than Silvio Berlusconi - Italy's Prime Minister and one of the most controversial leaders in the world. He's the one in the middle with all the makeup on.
About 15 minutes later, I was almost bumped into by the current MotoGP World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo. He was with just one friend/bodyguard, and I wouldn't have even noticed him but my buddy pointed him out. We shook hands and chatted very briefly, but I didn't want to be obnoxious and didn't get a picture until he climbed up on the Yamaha stage amidst a throng of journos.
Back to the bikes. 3-wheelers were big, I think there's a lot of potential for the enclosed types (and their evolutions) to help bridge the gap between bikes and cars in the US. They're already popular in Europe.
The Brudelli Leanster - simply awesome. They need to do this with a naked version of the BMW S1000RR, traction control and SERIOUS power.
Let's not take it too far, though.
Honda had a cool display, check out the minibikes:
My favorite was definitely the NR...
As you would expect from EICMA, Ducati's area was probably the show's best. Very slick, and plenty of eye candy like the Diavel power cruiser (not for everyone but I predict it'll be a sales smash) and the 848 EVO.
KTM's booth was also very well done. Of course I spent some time with my favorite bike, the RC8R. Even tastier in 2011 with some subtle improvements.
Electrics were big this year. Matt rode this one, said it was pretty good. Sadly it's overpriced for the performance and I don't think you'll be seeing one stateside anytime soon...
Brammo's new bike the Empulse is much more realistic.
Biaggi's WSBK-winning RSV4
Helmet, Italian style.
Yamaha Super Tenere
CR&S is a very small Italian manufacturer, they had some great stuff.
Her suit is for less wind resistance on the bike. Riiiiiiggght...
I think this guy must be famous. Otherwise he could never get away with that insouciant beard.
The Chinese are coming on strong, a whole section of EICMA was dominated by Chinese manufacturers.
The new Tuono. Not the best looking, but considering the performance you can forgive it.
And, the new Speed Triple. I don't think I could forgive this one.
The only way to make a Kawi look good? A bit of the aforementioned "enhancement"
Or, take its clothes off.
Nice setup but it's a Bimmer, so the speakers will only play James Taylor
Coolest pit bike
Europe gets a lot of good stuff that is never seen stateside:
"Are you done yet?" Yes, yes I am.
